Diamond and Scoundrels: My Life in the Jewelry Business

“Because I was naive, I made many wrong decisions, and more than once I trusted the wrong people.” – Adrienne Rubin.

LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, February 27, 2020 / — Adrienne Rubin once worked out of her car, pulling a suitcase loaded with silver, gold, and gemstone jewelry, which she sold wholesale to stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. Adrienne has stated that by chance, on a vacation to Mexico, she fell into the jewelry business when she and her husband Stanford reconnected with the owner of a high-end silver store, and the store owner sought legal advice on problems with a Los Angeles Jewelry wholesaler.

“I was feeling bereft,” states Adrienne. “Our two children were in school, and my brief career as a school teacher had not satisfied my ambitions or creativity. My volunteer work with a local hospital to compile two cookbooks for fundraising had ended, and I was at loose ends. I thought, ‘I’ll sell silver jewelry for him!’ It wasn’t easy AT ALL, but I learned, and grew the business from part-time to full-time. I did it!”

It seems that this path was destined for Adrienne, as eventually the company mushroomed to include gold chains from the downtown LA Jewelry District, then gemstone jewelry found at jewelry shows in Hong Kong and Italy. However, this success came at a cost as Adrienne found herself to be naive enough to believe that anyone who bought her jewelry was as trustworthy as her father, a mistake that shaped Adrienne’s future. “Because I was naive, I made many wrong decisions, and more than once I trusted the wrong people,” claims Adrienne. “Yet each time I fell, I got right back up again. Giving up was never an option. To get to where you want to go, you cannot let fear of failure get in your way. For me, every challenge was an opportunity to soar even higher than before.” It's enough to say that after everything, Adrienne found out there are crooks out there, and she was adamant that dishonest people would NOT profit from her ever again.

From the age of two Adrienne grew up in Beverly Hills after moving from Chicago with her family. She graduated from Beverly Hills High School and spent a year in Lausanne, Switzerland, attending the School of Modern French where she learned to speak French fluently. She completed her college studies at UC Berkeley, and graduated from UCLA with a Master of Teaching degree. She married Stanford Rubin, a relationship that lasted more than 50 years. Adrienne and Stan raised their daughter Pamela and son Randall, and enjoy traveling with their three grandsons and cooking for them; Grand-Mère's most desirable meal is her tender brisket.

Adrienne has certainly made a name for herself in the jewelry business and as an author, but she also is involved in humanitarian efforts. In October 2019, the Los Angeles Arthritis Foundation honored Adrienne with the Jane Wyman Humanitarian Award as their top L.A fundraiser. For ten years now, Adrienne has been riding her bike in the California Coast Classic of the Arthritis Foundation, an eight-day cycling trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles along California's coastline.

“I was a total neophyte when the bicycle tour was proposed as a fundraiser. I had to purchase a bicycle and take lessons to learn how to operate the gears,” states Adrienne. “Approximately 350 cyclists participate each year. My husband has been challenged with arthritis since his 30s, and had both hips replaced plus numerous back surgeries for arthritis complications. He served as chairman of the national Arthritis Foundation board of directors. As he became less active in fundraising, I became more involved.”

Adrienne Rubin

“Diamonds and Scoundrels” is a memoir that follows Adrienne Rubin as she first begins in the jewelry business. When Adrienne Rubin enters into the jewelry business in 1970s Los Angeles, she is a maverick in a world dominated by men. She soon meets a young hotshot salesman who doesn’t seem to struggle at all, and when he asks her to be his partner, she is excited to join him. She doesn’t know him well, but she does know his father, and she believes he is as trustworthy as the day is long.

“Diamonds and Scoundrels” shows us how a woman in a man’s world, with tenacity and sheer determination, can earn respect and obtain a true sense of accomplishment. Following Rubin’s experiences in the jewelry industry through the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s—with the ups and downs, good guys and bad—this is a tale of personal growth, of how to overcome challenges with courage and resilience. It’s a story for the woman today who, in addition to a rich family life, seeks a self-realized, fulfilling path toward a life well lived.

“Diamonds & Scoundrels is an incredible story of a woman who seemingly had it all but craved purpose. Through determination, boldness, entrepreneurial spirit and sheer will, she built a flourishing business, smashed barriers and proved that no dream is out of reach if you simply refuse to quit,” states Matt Iseman, host of American Ninja Warrior. It seems that this memoir from Adrienne Rubin is one you don’t want to miss out on.

Henry Johnstone launches workshops to help men create life changes by creating art

Henry Johnstone in action during one of his ground breaking metal work retreats

Henry Johnstone has launched unique workshops to help men's mental health.

NORFOLK, UNITED KINGDOM, February 20, 2020 / — Men’s coach Henry Johnstone has launched a new series of unique workshops that help men realise that by mastering the intense heat of a forge, they can also begin to radically change the narrative that they have been living inside for years.

Henry’s formative years were shaped by comments such as "He has lots of potential, but doesn't use it" and "He is such a sensitive boy but he seems so lost." He always felt directionless and without hope. After receiving a diagnosis of bipolar type 2, he wasn’t able to find therapy or treatments which were effective enough to help him become the man he wanted to be. Rather than let his spiral into addiction dictate the rest of his life, Henry researched a variety of coping strategies that helped not only relieve his acute suffering but also provide a rock-solid formation upon which to build a new way of living.

He has worked with young men for over 2 years, teaching them how to vocalise their emotions in a non-destructive way, and sharing the techniques that he found so useful himself.

Henry always had an affinity with metalwork and creating sculptures from steel. Whilst working through some darker periods of his life using metalwork as a release and a therapy Henry realised that the process of using his hands to control the intense heat and powerful tools were skills that would also fit brilliantly within his coaching programmes.

He found he could transform himself as he transformed steel. It brought clarity and direction, it brought vision and a sense of completion. He knew that anyone who joined him in the workshop would feel the same benefits. Young men come to the fully functioning metal workshop and set an intention, for the aspect of themselves they want to leave behind and aspect of themselves they want to embody moving forward. They create a symbol of what this represents to them and create it out of steel.

A converted 19th-century watermill in Norfolk provides a serene backdrop for his three-day workshops, where clients are taught how to create stunning artwork. They are also given tools and techniques for working on themselves. He has incorporated group bonding activities such as cooking meals and building fires for each other, which demonstrate that collaboration can lead to revelation. Henry also calls on trusted public speakers and mentors to come and teach meditation, self-defence, and leadership skills.

Past attendees have said; “You really are an amazing Coach and I feel so much better after talking to you about 'stuff'. Reflecting…it's interesting how the process of talking makes me think about things differently than if I just mull over and stew on things” and “Henry is an amazing and wonderful coach. I was really depressed when I came to Henry. I had a great job and a great family, but I was miserable, I wasn't happy. Henry has helped me so much in getting past my blocks. I feel refreshed and more in control and happier. Henry understands and his powerful intuition pinpoints the problem, he gets to the root quickly.”

Learning Nutrition Hands-on in the Garden

The children help plant the garden at Riverbend Head Start.

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Provider Riverbend Head Start in Alton, IL, featured by the National CACFP Sponsors Association

The learning process is diminished when a child is hungry or unhealthy. Riverbend Head Start strongly believes that a child must be healthy in order to learn.”

— John Kuanfung

AUSTIN, TX, USA, February 20, 2020 / — Riverbend Head Start in Madison County, IL, first opened their doors in 1916. They now have six Head Start centers and serve around 700 students. Jon Kuanfung had the opportunity to join the team two years ago as a Nutrition Specialist and is working alongside a passionate staff dedicated to the nutrition and betterment of the children they serve.

“The learning process is diminished when a child is hungry or unhealthy. Riverbend Head Start strongly believes that a child must be healthy in order to learn.”

Jon stresses the importance of teaching nutrition at an early age. As obesity rates and the amount of chronic diseases increase, the best time to educate children is when habits are beginning to form. Change is usually a difficult process, and it is an easier task to help habits form rather than changing them later in life. If children learn the habits earlier and create a healthy lifestyle, they can rely on them through adulthood.

The nutrition education that Riverbend teaches is two-fold, focusing on kids at the center and kids at home. Wanting to include more fresh, home-cooked meals on the menu, Jon began establishing gardens at all of the sites. Both the staff and families are instrumental in the success of the gardens. The children tend and harvest the gardens. The nutrition curriculum from the garden incorporates phonics, math, science, and social studies. Teachers focus on what healthy choices are, what fruits and vegetables do to strengthen our bodies, and lead monthly cooking activities.

Riverbend wants to ensure that nutrition education continues at home. Families are encouraged to visit the garden and harvest the vegetables for personal use. Cooking demonstrations are presented at monthly meetings and parents are able to taste the food their children eat. Cooking and nutrition lessons are taught on the Riverbend online channel where featured recipes are easy and quick. Riverbend hopes to grow both their programs at school and in homes to continue influencing children in developing healthy lifestyles habits.

CACFP is an indicator of quality child care. When children are cared for by providers who are part of the CACFP, they are receiving the best nutrition available. Learn more about other CACFP providers featured in the Member Showcase through the National CACFP Sponsors Association.

Since 1986, the National CACFP Sponsors Association (NCA) has been the leading national organization for sponsors who administer the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). It provides education and support to thousands of members in the CACFP community and in particular to sponsors of all sizes from across the country. CACFP strives to improve communication between families, caregivers, sponsors and their supervising government agencies.

AFN collaborates with WWF to combat plastic pollution in the ‘Your Plastic Diet’ campaign lobbying for a globally binding treaty on plastic pollution.

The only way we are going to stem the flow of plastic into nature is at a global level, a Paris Climate Agreement, but against plastic pollution.”

— Kim Stengert, Chief, Strategic Communication & External Relations, WWF-SGP

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, February 20, 2020 / — Asia’s largest TV and Online food channel, the Asian Food Network (AFN) is shocking food lovers into action to help save the environment in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). A series of filmed episodes sees Celebrity chefs cooking delicious food such as Soy Sauce Sea Bass and Spicy Clams before adding plastic items like shredded water bottles and grated plastic straws to the food.

The recipes are the latest work in an ongoing campaign created by Grey Malaysia, ‘Your Plastic Diet’, which was launched last year to help WWF lobby for a globally binding treaty on plastic pollution. The campaign raises awareness on how plastic pollution has led to particles of microplastic being ingested by people all over the world. The specially commissioned study with The University of Newcastle found that people could be consuming on average five grams of plastic a week, the same as eating a credit card.

Launching this week (w/c 17/2), the specially created recipes will be running across the AFN network, in a total of 11 countries (Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Taiwan). The combination of twenty separate ‘60 and ‘30 second spots include:

– Sarah Benjamin frying Spicy Clams with shredded plastic cup

– Sherson Lian cooking up a comforting oyster porridge with chopped plastic plate

– Debbie Wong baking soy sauce sea bass with granulated plastic straws

– A DIY video recipe on how to make Basil Prawns with sliced plastic bottle

The recipes all contain a call to action to join the movement of people from around the world who are already lobbying their governments to change their policy on plastic pollution. Launched by Grey Malaysia in June last year, the Plastic Diet campaign has helped WWF gain support from over 1.6 million people from over 180 countries…”. – becoming the largest and fastest growing movement in WWF history.

Says Kim Stengert, Chief, Strategic Communication and External Relations at WWF-Singapore: “The only way we are going to stem the flow of plastic into nature is at a global level, a Paris Climate Agreement, but against plastic pollution. From the G20 to the UN Assembly, the ‘Plastic Diet’ is now a constant reminder to policy and decision makers everywhere that urgent action is needed, and that over 1.6m people from 180 countries are counting on them to agree on a globally binding treaty on plastic.”

Commenting on the collaboration, Graham Drew, Executive Creative Director of Grey Malaysia: “It’s hard to think of a better partner to highlight the fact that plastic is now in almost everything we eat and drink than Asia’s largest food network, it’s brilliant to have their support. Your Plastic Diet reveals a shocking truth, but importantly gives the public an active role in making the changes the world’s governments need to make.”

Their tireless efforts of setting up and cleaning up, while cooking and serving the food & beverages in-between, made this event run smoothly and soundlessly. Consequently, a big ‘Thank You’ is owed to all involved who helped make this wonderful evening a success. Much fun was had to enjoy the superb food, great music, and fabulous company.

UAE Nutritional Supplements Industry

UAE Nutritional Supplements Industry

Effect of 100% Excise Duty on Energy Drinks, Sugary Beverages and Sweeteners in 2020 will hamper the growth of the UAE Functional Beverages Market.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES ( UAE ), February 17, 2020 / — • The urban population is increasing in UAE and is expected to reach to about 8.8 Million in 2023 from 8.0 Million in 2018. The increase in urban population will boost the nutritional supplements market as these people will have a higher awareness about the health and wellness products and better accessibility to the products.

• The consumer expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages (at current prices) in UAE is expected to witness a CAGR of 5.2% during 2018-2023 and reach to a value of AED 97 Billion. The increase in consumption of the functional food and beverages will be a key driver in the growth of the consumer expenditure.

• Probiotics consumption helps in prevention of ailments such as irritable bowel syndrome, gestational diabetes, allergies and obesity. Moreover, increasing awareness among the consumers for the products have helped in establishing brands such as Activia Laban, Actimel, Yakult, Pro Bio, Probulin Probiotics and others in the UAE region.

Global Events such as Dubai Expo will help in generating demand: Dubai is going to host Dubai Expo 2020 in which numerous visitors and business delegates will visit from different part of the globe. The Dubai government has organized a campaign called “Welcome to Future” for the event. More than 25 million people will be visiting the country during April 2020 to October 2020 as per the government estimations 70% of these visitors will be from different European nations. This inflow of people will help in stable the market for functional beverages in the country which has been declined little after the implementation of Excise Duty on the energy drinks.

Key initiatives undertaken by the government: The government of UAE is proactively participating in the development of health and wellness awareness in the region. Healthcare is one of the key focus for government in the Vision 2021. It has also formed National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031 focusing on improving the health and wellness scenario in the region. In addition, to this the government has also added excise duty on certain product categories which the government deems to be not good for the consumption. As the health awareness will increase among the masses they will start consuming vitamins and dietary supplement products in order to prevent ailments and diseases.

New Children's Album Release: “OOH LA LA TOO DOO NA NA OOP BOP OOP BOP RIBBIT”

Ooh La La Too Doo Na Na Oop Bop Oop Bop Ribbit Album Cover

New Children’s Album by Kelli Welli – Ooh La La Too Doo Na Na Oop Bop Oop Bop Ribbit

New Children’s album from Portland, OR-based kindie musician Kelli Welli: 16 songs available now

PORTLAND, OREGON, UNITED STATES, February 17, 2020 / — Newly released album “OOH LA LA TOO DOO NA NA OOP BOP OOP BOP RIBBIT” is a compilation of favorite Kelli Welli sing-a-long and storytelling songs, along with some new tunes, and the lullabies she wrote during her first year as a new mom to boy/girl twins. Her original songs, often inspired by the kids and animals in her life, weave unique, sometimes silly tales, celebrate love, sunshine, nature, different languages, and honor the details that come with raising the amazing little people in our lives.

This album opens with “Turtlurtlurtle,” a song inspired by the wacky nickname given to a little friend by her grandparents, which was named the 2019 Winner of the West Coast Songwriters International Song Contest. “La Lullaby,” which includes a verse in French and is one of five lullabies on the album, also received Honorable Mention in the 2019 WCS contest. The album includes one cover, a Norman Blake style version of “You Are My Sunshine,” with an original Kelli Welli verse.

The album was produced by masterful musician Timothy James Uecker and excellent recording engineer Gabe Johnston at Falcon Recording Studio in Portland. It features children’s voices and musical talents of some parents whose kids a few songs were written for.

Listen to the album now on SoundCloud:

Kelli Welli bio info: Kelli Caldwell is an active songwriter in both the Children’s and Singer-Songwriter/Americana “grown-up” music arenas, mainly performing for kids as Kelli Welli. She’s released several children’s EPs and singles over recent years and though she’s new to the thriving Portland kindie scene, was just named TOP 5 Parent Picks for 2020 by PDX Parent Magazine.

Drawing on her unique upbringing (more below), Kelli’s wide-ranging songwriting for children is smart, fun, often hilarious, sometimes reflective and deeply sweet. Always genuine. Kelli’s been called, “hysterical and superbly talented” by fellow artists and parents often say, “This is music I can actually listen to over and over… and over… and still enjoy!” And a local fan mom recently wrote to say, "I've cried twice now when listening to 'I'm in Love with You.' Such lovely songs!"

“I write songs for kids and the people who love them,” Kelli likes to say. “As a parent of young children myself, I know what it’s like to listen to the same music on repeat. So I appreciate songs that are smart, have depth, make me and my kids laugh, give teaching tools, just make us laugh together, or include elements that make me feel connected to other parents going through similar stages, worries, joys, and priceless moments. So it’s unbelievably fulfilling to get that kind of feedback about my songs from parents, as well as their fun kiddos.”

Kelli has always danced to her own beat. She is the daughter of two fine artists, an award-winning wearable artist and illustrator, and a successful oil painter and conga drummer who currently produces community concerts. As a child, Kelli did a stint as a French clown named Rosebud; started kindergarten from a tent; lived in an octagon-shaped house on stilts with her one-eyed cat named Mighty Mouse; had a best friend named Summer Wind O'Redwoods; and had 50+ hamsters at one point. She has raised angel fish from eggs and kittens with a bottle, plays ice and roller hockey, and has a fairly green thumb.

Kelli has a Master of Publishing degree and a B.A. in Speech Comm with minors in Japanese and German. After working in PR for Harper's Magazine in NYC, she returned to Portland and started a corporate publishing business before focusing more full time on motherhood and music. Kelli has studied speech-level singing with The Voice Project and spent 8+ years as a key member of the Portland Songwriters Association board, is a member of West Coast Songwriters, Nashville Songwriters Association, Children’s Music Network, and SCBWI.
