The Montgomery County Water System will officially transition to chloramines for water disinfection beginning October 6.
Customers may notice County and municipal Public Works crews flushing water lines throughout the distribution system as part of the transition. This flushing is necessary to help move chloraminated water through the system and ensure a smooth conversion.
Chloramines are commonly used as a drinking water disinfectant and are formed by combining chlorine with a small amount of ammonia. Residents should be aware that chloraminated water requires special consideration for aquariums, fish and other aquatic animals, and kidney dialysis. Chloramines are safe for normal household uses, including drinking, cooking, bathing, and washing.
