Normal Water Use May Resume Across Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties
BALTIMORE (Sept. 30, 2026) – The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), in coordination with state emergency management officials and WSSC Water, is informing residents that the essential-water-use-only restriction has been officially lifted for all 1.9 million customers across Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, effective immediately.
Following the resolution of yesterday’s internal electrical fault at the Potomac Water Filtration Plant, water production and delivery have returned to full capacity. State and utility engineers confirmed overnight that water storage reservoirs, main lines, and system pressures across the distribution network have completely stabilized.
- Water is Safe to Drink: Tap water throughout the service area remains fully safe for drinking, cooking, bathing, and all household needs.
- No Boil Water Notice Required: Water quality remained fully protected throughout the event, meeting all federal and state Safe Drinking Water Act standards. No boiling is required.
Residents and businesses may now return to normal water usage, including running laundry, dishwashers, and irrigation systems. If customers notice brief air sputtering or minor discoloration when turning on faucets, running cold water for 1 to 2 minutes will clear private plumbing lines.
